The System Headroom Calculator answers one question: at your listening seat, how loud can this system actually play before the amplifier runs out?
You pick a speaker and an amplifier and enter your seating distance. The tool computes the peak level that pair reaches at that distance and sets it against SMPTE RP 200-2002, which puts reference level at 85 dBC with the calibration signal 20 dB below full scale — so the number you get is measured against a calibration standard rather than against a marketing claim. It also tells you how much further back you could sit before the system falls short of it.
It applies three corrections that most headroom calculators skip. Sensitivity is usually published at 2.83 V rather than 1 watt, and into 4 ohms that is 2 watts, so treating it as 1 W at 1 m overstates every 4-ohm speaker by 3 dB. Klipsch publishes half-space sensitivity, about 3 dB higher than full-space. And receiver power is almost always rated with two channels driven, so full surround use is derated.
It is an estimator built from published specifications, not a measurement. The room-gain term is the weakest number in it and carries about ±3 dB. Below the room’s Schroeder frequency none of the model applies. The tool states this on its own face, and lists every source it used.
